The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, split into 12 groups of four. Each side plays three group-stage matches.
- Group stage — 12 groups × 4 teams; top two of each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advance.
- Knockouts — Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final, with a third-place play-off.
- Tiebreakers — points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head.
